Composition
Deepak was commissioned to write a composition for classical
guitar and bansuri. This piece was commissioned by award-winning classical guitarist,
Mesut Ozgen and was premiered at the recital hall, University of California,
Santa Cruz, on March 5/6, 2004.
Based on raga Kirwani, the parts for the guitar are through composed, while
the bansuri parts with the exception of the main melody, are left with open
spaces and meeting points for the bansuri to improvise, which is the quintessence
of north Indian music. This piece is called Surya and is dedicated to Pandit
Ravi Shankar.
Out on DVD in 2006.

Press release from M.E.L.T. 2000, South Africa, April 13, 2000
DEEPAK RAM WINS BEST INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM
SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC AWARDS 2000
Bansuri flute master, Deepak Ram, was another exciting M.E.L.T.
2000 artist to take home a SAMA award at the 6th annual FNB SAMA awards, held
at the Sun City Superbowl last Thursday evening, for his soul soothing album,
Searching for Satyam.
Deepak was nominated for Best Male Artist and Best Instrumental
Album in 1999. This year justice was done and Deepak won BEST INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM,
confirming appreciation of his musical contributions to both the international
and South African markets.
Searching for Satyam is at times melancholic and haunting, at
others strangely uplifting, yet lives up to its name in a cross section of music
that blends many styles in a search for the perfect sound. Deepak combines his
masterly flute with tabla, drums, percussion, guitar and double bass. He comes
away with music that is neither Indian nor western, yet uniquely Deepak Ram.
"Music for me is the only way to communicate the reality
that exists within us all. The dialect used in this recording was inspired by
the masters of this musical language, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Chaurasia
and the group, Shakti, amongst others. My previous three recordings can be found
in the world music, jazz and classical sections of music stores. I would put
"searching for Satyam" into the enjoyment category. I am pleased to
introduce to South Africa four great musicians from France, India, Spain and
Austria."
"Searching for Satyam" is an album designed to become
chill-out favorite amongst jazz-heads. Ambient music eat your heart out, 'cos
this is the real thing! Deepak is a master of the bansuri flute, a haunting
traditional Indian instrument that he mixes masterfully with acoustic jazz improvisation.
The production has a pure live feel to it, there are no electronic noodlings
in here but there is plenty of experimentation and aural textures to lose yourself
in. Music for the soul, make no mistake. Wax Magazine, October 1999.
